The vet wasn't much help

Those were
the chilling words he told me.
"What?" I cried.
"Her Kidneys
have stopped functioning. I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do to save
her." Replied the vet,
"It'd be
better if you let me put her to sleep. She'll be dead soon anyway and
you don't want her to suffer any more do you?"
"But...
B,But she's only five years old... How could she have kidney disease so
young, I mean cats are supposed to live for
at least 15 years aren't
they?" I stammered through the tears that were already welling up in my
eyes.
"In the past
maybe, but more and more cats are dying younger these days. Modern life
is much more stressful on pets." Was the lame reply.
Empty Words
The vets
empty words rang in my head as I left the surgery.
As I
stumbled toward my car with Kitty's empty cage in my hands, a forlorn
figure to the casual observer, the dam burst.
Tears were
streaming down my face now and I didn't care who saw me. "It
just wasn't fair!" This was my second
beloved cat that'd died long before her time.
What on
earth was I doing wrong?
I couldn't
accept ... (Cont'd below)
The
Controversial Synthetic Vitamin K
Vitamin K (K1 or K2) is necessary in a cats diet as an aid
to blood clotting.
However,
synthetic vitamin K - vitamin
K3 or Menadione Sodium Bisulfite complex
(often used as a substitute artificial vitamin K) - is
not nearly as effective and
has been found to be toxic to humans.
It has been banned for
human consumption.
Menadione
derivatives - in the form of menadione sodium bisulfate, menadione
sodium bisulfite, menadione dimethylprimidinol sulfate, menadione
dimethylprimidinol sulfite or menadione dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite -
are often listed as "a source of vitamin K activity" or
"vitamin K supplement"
"Synthetic vitamins are often used because they are a cheaper
alternative than naturally occurring vitamin K.(Vitamin K1 and K2)"
Some
manufacturers leave out the "menadione" part of the above chemical
names in their ingredient lists (e.g. you see only "dimethylprimidinol
sulfate" listed instead of "menadione dimethylprimidinol sulfate")...
In addition,
of course, it's not as simple to find as it should be.
Some pet food ingredient lists will say 'menadione', some will
say
'sodium bisulfate', and some will mention vitamin K3 in parenthesis.
Menadione
does not only occur in
dry and canned foods either, but
also edible chew toys, supplements and treats as
well.
To be safe,
thoroughly research any item with an ingredient list that
claims a " source of vitamin
K", "source of vitamin K activity" or "vitamin K" in parentheses and
contact the manufacturer if you have any questions.
Scientific studies show
that Synthetic Vitamin K or Menadione has the following
undesirable effects when ingested orally.
Causes formation of radicals from enzymes of leucocytes, with the
consequence of cytotoxic reactions
Considerably WEAKENS the immune system
Possible mutagenic effects
Damages the natural vitamin K cycle
Has no effect on coumarin derivatives
(toxins found in many plants), which are often present in commercial
food due to mold contamination (toxic when ingested)
Causes hemolytic anemia and hyperbilirubinemia (a form of jaundice),
not just linked to large doses
Disturbs the level of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the body, which is an
important factor in fibrinolysis - the breakdown of blood clots
Is directly toxic in high doses (vomiting, albuminuria)
Unlike natural vitamin K it builds up in tissue and has been detected
in eggs, meat and milk of animals supplemented with menadione
derivatives
Causes irritation of skin and mucous membranes
Causes allergic reactions and eczema

different now from a few years ago but not that different! And, in any
case, cats shouldn't be suffering the way mine did should they? There
had to be a reason for it and I vowed to find out what it was.
Horrific Journey
My quest
took me on an horrific journey -- I even visited a meat rendering plant
and that experience changed me for ever...
It scared me
silly... it was all I could do to stop myself from vomiting on the
spot...
Piles of rotting, bloody carcases! -- Stephen
King couldn't have invented a more ghoulish plot.
But what I
was seeing was real... it was happening right before my eyes... the
taste of death and putrefaction was appalling... seeping into every
pore of my skin... Charnel House is a polite way of describing that
hideous institution.
Yet ANOTHER
Salmonella Scare Affects Cat Food
till think
commercial cat food is safe to feed your cat?
Mars Pet Food announced a
voluntary recall of many brands
of dog and cat food on 9/12/08
due to "potential contamination with Salmonella".
At the last count over 41 brands of cat food including the
Special Kitty Gourmet range were affected.
The recall only affects products sold in the United States.

production costs to a minimum by reducing the
quality of the food... yet still maintain a
high level of profit...

end to the horrors these fiends will go to to

I found that it costs me less in vet visits if I
feed them a quality diet, so they just don't get sick. Also, if a new
cat comes in that's is poor shape, I immediately put it on the raw meat
diet, and they ALWAYS get better.
I go through about 10 lbs of chicken twice a week.
For a treat, they love pumpkin or squash, cooked
with a little
butter drizzled on it. (Never use margarine, of course.)
